My husband had been not so subtly hinting that he really wanted a rangefinder to help improve his golf game. I kept asking him to pick a brand and let me know, but he never did. I decided I wanted to get him one for Christmas so I got online and did the research myself. Let me tell you, these bad boys can get pricey. So I found one that was middle of the road as far as price goes, but that had great reviews. It was the Nikon Coolshot 20 Laser Rangefinder. He was so excited to get it and couldn’t wait to start testing it. We live in Arizona so the winter is prime golf time here. He’s used this rangefinder about 10 times now and so I’m going to be basing this product review on the opinion of Mr. Review Shrew. On a side note, a couple of his friends got different brand rangefinders as well so this has really helped him to compare the features on his.

Here are the product details according to the website:
-The new COOLSHOT 20 delivers world-class performance in a compact and lightweight body. With the speed, precision, and optical quality of the COOLSHOT 20, this rangefinder can help you develop club distance proficiency on the driving range and game management skills on the golf course.
-See what lies ahead, or behind, not just the distance to the flagstick. 6x monocular featuring Nikon’s legendary optical technology provides bright, clear images.
-At just 4.4 ounces, the COOLSHOT 20 is also the most compact model in the Nikon Golf line. Even though this rangefinder is unbelievably small, it delivers big on precision. This easy to use tool can fit comfortably in any pocket or golf bag so there’s no excuse for not using it on every shot.
-COOLSHOT 20 displays precise distance to the flagstick, but is just as useful for getting distances to hazards, trees, mounds and other objects on the course. See your best shot option from a player’s perspective and get on the straight path to a faster, sweeter approach–the right approach.
-8-Second Continuous Scanning-Push the Power button and the rangefinder will continuously range for eight seconds. This is great when trying to find measurements of multiple or very small or thin objects, allowing you to know the distances to hazards, pins, mounds, and trees in a push of the button.
-First Target Priority Mode-With this revolutionary technology, the COOLSHOT 20 will give you the distance reading of the closest targeted object amongst a group of objects. This is extremely beneficial when ranging a flagstick in front of a group of trees.
-Weatherproof-The materials and technology used in the COOLSHOT 20 will allow for continued use during inclement weather. Having a wide temperature tolerance and being rainproof, there is no need to put this rangefinder away when the weather turns poor.
-Versatile Tool-The COOLSHOT 20 rangefinder can range any object within sight. This includes hills, doglegs, trees, bunkers, lakes, golf carts, and eventually the flagstick. No need for satellites or reflectors to find a distance to any desired object.
-Tee Shot with Dogleg Corner-A dogleg corner makes guessing distance difficult. Measure the distance to a tree in front of the corner then the distance to the woods to get the distance to the center of the fairway. Now you can swing without hesitation.
-Second Shot with a Hazard-With a bunker or pond in front of the green, measure the distance to the edge of the green and the distance to the hazard to play it safe.
-Approach Shot-On the approach, use COOLSHOT to measure points such as front or back of green, bunkers and the flagstick itself to determine the right approach on every hole. COOLSHOT’s 6x optical monocular helps you see what’s ahead before you swing.
-USGA Compliant- Complies with USGA Local Rule 14-3 for tournament play.
-2 Year Warranty-If any Nikon rangefinder is found to have defects in workmanship or materials, Nikon will, at its option, repair or replace it at no charge for a period of 2 years from the date of purchase.
My husband has had a chance to use this 12-15 times now and here is his list of pros and cons:
-The Nikon Coolshot 20 is smaller and more lightweight than most others he’s used or seen.
-He believes it gives very accurate distances.
-The Nikon magnifies well.
-The 8 second continuous scanning on the Nikon Coolshot 20 seems to be, by far, the best advantage it offers. What this means is that while you’re holding the button and scanning for 8 seconds you’re able to see multiple distances during that single scan. So not only can you see the distance to the pin but also to the front of the green, the back of the green, the bunker to the side of the green as well as any other distance around that area that you’d like. With most other rangefinders you can only get one distance and if you want to know any others you have to start over with a brand new scan.
-Since the Nikon Coolshot 20 is so much smaller than most, the only problem my husband found was that it takes a very steady hand. It has to be held still in order for it to scan and find the distance. If you have a shaky hand at all, it can be hard, if not impossible, to get a reading. He said with the bigger ones he didn’t notice this to be a problem.
Overall my husband said he would recommend this product. He loves using it and thinks it helps to improve his golf game.
